Fronterista
Fronterista describes almost anything on or having to do with a border. Susannah Mississippi Byrd calls herself a fronterista, or a woman of the border. The Border for me is Laredo, Texas, where I was born and raised and periodically return for soul nourishment. I am a fronterista. Not only was I born on The Border, but I am a fronterista in my thoughts and speech. I think in both English and Spanish, codeswitch (speak Spanglish) several times in one or more sentences, I even listen to music and interpret it without effort. I love everything about The Border: the shared culture, history, foods, traditions, celebrations, rites of passage, and the skies. Mostly I love the people.
This is why I came to love Austin. The cultures, the foods, the celebrations, the people. Austinites are the most awesome people I have ever met. The youth around these parts are so cool. Getting to know them is one of the greatest perks of working to become a school librarian. I also love the services available to the community. I can spend my time reading in either English or Spanish because there are books available in both languages at school and public libraries. Downloading audiobooks from the public library is not my favorite way to read but it is my favorite way to get to sleep. It's like some one is putting me to bed with an amazing story. Often, I'll borrow movies or show seasons (and watch them with subtitles on because I love reading so much) to relax on weekends or during school breaks.
I love helping to keep Austin weird and reading.
