Gratitude Journal
To design and decorate journals for personal entries of gratitude. single subject notebooks, scissors, glue/gluesticks, pencils, pencil colors, rulers, recycled material (magazines, inserts, calendars, newspapers, etc.) *stencils, quote books, silly-edge scissors Gratitiude Journals have been used as a psychology tool to help improve mood and life outlook. Children of low SES can come to see how much they have in a society that constantly bombards them with advertising reminders of all the materials and lifestyles they do not have. Students will be given recycled materials to cut and paste on the cover of their own gratitude journal (single-subject notebook). They will be guided through a think aloud of examples for which to be grateful. Examples include experiences, material objects, relationships, accomplishments, help, or emotions. Students will write at least three examples for each day they attend the program. |

Shrink-a-dink Bookmark Making
To construct personalized placemarkers for academic and pleasure reading. clear salad boxes, sandpaper, single-punch holepuncher, pencils, pencil colors, permanent ink pens, toaster oven, *yarn, stencils, quote books, printing capabilities Teacher will preheat toaster oven. Students will sand the area of the salad box indicated in the pictures. They will cut the excess/sides of the plastic. They will color in a design of their choosing with pencil colors. They will use the holepuncher to punch a hole for a ring or tassel. The plastic piece will be heated to shrink and harden for about ten minutes. This can be done after program hours to be returned as soon as the teacher is done shrinking all bookmarks. Each student will finish designing and coloring their personal bookmark. |
