This is the image that's been blasting all over the AISD website inviting folks to attend the Back to School BASH. This is the unedited image where you can see my back lonjas. My work was representing Recycled Reads. Thanks, AISD, for documenting my work as an Austin Public Library Connected Youth Intern. Author PJ Hoover treated Andrews 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to a post-STAAR presentation compliments of Project WISE. Her book has been passed from one class to the next. I am so grateful to the Writer's League of Texas for providing free author visits! Check out The Digital Divas. We practiced for 6 weeks and performed at the Texas Library Association Conference in Fort Worth. We were so good no one else entered the competition! I am grateful for being in the ranks of incredibly talented librarians. Our April Poe"Tree" was pretty bare because of STAAR testing, but I have a strong feeling a number of students fell in love with poetry because of Jack Prelutzky. NEA's Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss's Birthday coincided with Texas Independence Day, so this Cat in the Hat wore cowboy boots to celebrate all three. We celebrated African-American Heritage Month and El dia del amor y la amistad by learning a bit about the Civil Rights Movement and which books Andrews' faculty like to share with their friends and loved ones. Unfortunately, this is the only record of our wildly successful Haunted Library at the Andrews Fall Carnival. I am ever so grateful to the AMAZING Americorps ACE Tutors who helped with the set up and execution. Our entrance appeared to be Candyland brought to life gradually turning into a cave and tunnel that patrons had to crawl through to the sounds of screaming, pounding, hurting "souls". Other proof of our hard work included sore arms and hoarse voices as well as crying children. No better way to teach children how to be productive citizens than by example. I am grateful to live in a country that allows me to choose my leaders. My very first bulletin board and display as an official librarian. This wasn't mounted on a wall for my Back to School Night orientation, but a quick call to the maintenance department solved that. My favorite is the in la' kech poem. Mrs. Gayla Beaver used her connections (her daughter) at the Freeman Coliseum to bring the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to the Andrews Library. They not only decorated our library, they also donated paintings by clowns and elephants as well as hundreds of Scholastic paperback books. I am so grateful to her and my administration for the opportunity to serve the Andrews community. I am grateful to Mandy and Mayra for interfiling the English and Spanish fiction section. I am grateful to Otilo for staying late with me to finish inventory and buying me dinner. The page corner bookmarks (instructions in the book crafts tab) have proven to be great gifts. This Agent P example is one of the many I've given out. Others include Winnie the Pooh, panda, AngryBirds, SpongeBob Squarepants, etc. Recycled Reads offered me an opportunity to conduct a book art upcycling project at the Ruiz Branch on my birthday. We had a diverse group of patrons show up and create their own versions to take home. Keeping discarded books out of landfills really feels good, but the best birthday gift came later when I was nominated for an Austin Public Library Above and Beyond Award for my work! I tried my hand at a Mother's Day gift that ended up being a Father's Day gift for my momma because it takes longer for more detailed pieces aaaand May was just crazy. I am grateful for proposals.
